PRESS RELEASE
A World of One’s Own | A Mind of One’s Own

Vadehra Art Gallery is pleased to announce a symbiotic exhibition across our modern and contemporary galleries, in which we explore the art of seeing as a two-fold genesis, employing the faculties of both vision and perception. The recurrent views of nature observed on, say, a languid walk in the park, leave lasting impressions on the mind that in time evolve into dreams, opinions and dialogue. The seeming objectivity transpiring in the animisms of nature, or the ‘view’, intermingles with the subjectivity of the viewer who brings an ever-ready context and coloration to what they are presented with, or a ‘point of view’.

In this symbiotic exhibition, spread across both our modern and contemporary galleries, we wished to explore a thematic dialogue between physical places and mental spaces, featuring multiple generations of artists. With this presentation, a key insight emerges: the protagonists of nature and the protagonists of self possess a varying degree of subjective objectivity and objective subjectivity. The resultant conditions are atmospheric landscapes and expressionistic portraiture and still life, heavily influenced by the mood of the view as well as the viewer.

In A WORLD OF ONE’S OWN, the works of artists Chameli Ramachandran,A. Ramachandran, Paramjit Singh, Arpita Singh, Benodebehari Mukherjee and Gieve Patel appear as travelogues, or excursions into nature, with romantic undertones scoring the choreographies of terrains and the flora that populates them. The viewfinder moves smoothly from roadmap to water body to mountain, to the humble habitat of the flower itself, invoking the potency of a moment of pause, guided by the deliberate perception of the interlocutor.

In A MIND OF ONE’S OWN, featuring artists Atul Bhalla, Anju Dodiya, Atul Dodiya, Nalini Malani, Gigi Scaria, Sudhir Patwardhan, Ranbir Kaleka, Jagannath Panda and Praneet Soi, the logic of suspended realities dominates over the conventions of experience, featuring works tinged with surrealist imaginations and an eclectic array of techniques to represent them. The excursions here are of impressions and likely remembrances that infuse with arbitrary symbolism to indicate the thinking and feeling mind, over systems of seeing that model the world more closely.

Due to the current circumstances, the shows are on view by appointment only
